Wood is hygroscopic. It exchanges water vapour with the air around it continuously and settles at a moisture content determined by the temperature and relative humidity it sits in. That number changes through the year in any normal building, and a puzzle cut to a few thousandths of an inch of clearance notices.
Equilibrium moisture content, in practical numbers
The concept has a precise name: equilibrium moisture content, or EMC. At a fixed temperature and humidity, wood eventually stops gaining or losing moisture and holds steady until conditions change.
Purdue Extension’s publication by Daniel Cassens on controlling moisture content in stored lumber gives the figures that make this concrete. At 70 degrees Fahrenheit and 35 percent relative humidity, comfortable indoor conditions, the EMC of wood is 6.9 percent. Move to summer conditions of 80 degrees and 80 percent humidity and the EMC rises to 15.7 percent. In a heated house in winter with no humidification, humidity can fall to 20 percent or less, and at 70 degrees the EMC drops to 4.5 percent.
That is a swing of more than 11 percentage points of moisture content across a year in an uncontrolled space. Cassens notes that interior lumber is kiln dried to 6 to 8 percent precisely because that sits midway between the normal extremes, so movement in either direction stays tolerable.
Change is not instant. A fully exposed board responds relatively quickly, thin stock faster than thick, and a tight stack changes at its edges long before its centre. A small puzzle piece is thin and fully exposed, so it responds fast.
Why the fit changes unevenly
If wood swelled equally in every direction, a puzzle would just get slightly bigger and still work. It does not. Carl Eckelman’s Purdue Extension publication on the shrinking and swelling of wood sets out the anisotropy: movement is greatest tangentially, roughly half that radially, and only 0.1 to 0.2 percent along the length.
The consequence for an interlocking puzzle is that a notch does not stay square. A slot cut across the grain widens or narrows at a different rate than the tongue that fills it, and if the two pieces were cut from stock with different grain orientation, they move against each other rather than together. That is why a puzzle can bind in one specific direction while other joints still slide freely.
Seasonal tightness and looseness
The pattern most collectors notice:
- Damp season. Pieces swell, clearances close, the puzzle stiffens. Severe cases seize completely.
- Dry season. Pieces shrink, the assembly rattles, and high level burrs can lose the friction that keeps intermediate positions stable.
- Rapid change. Worse than either extreme. Fast swings set up stress between the surface and the core of a piece, which is what causes checking.
Target conditions
Museum guidance for wooden objects is a reasonable benchmark for a collection at home. The Western Australian Museum’s preventive conservation manual for wood recommends relative humidity in the range of 40 to 60 percent with a maximum variation of 5 percent in any 24 hour period, and a temperature range of 15 to 25 degrees Celsius with a maximum variation of 4 degrees in 24 hours. It notes that keeping humidity below 65 percent helps prevent fungal damage, and advises against placing wooden objects near exterior walls, fireplaces, or heating and cooling vents.
The stability requirement matters more than the exact number. A collection held steadily at 50 percent will outlive one that oscillates between 35 and 65 percent, even though the average is the same.
A puzzle that has seized
What to do:
- Move it to a stable, moderately dry room and leave it alone for several weeks. Most seasonal binding reverses on its own.
- Keep it away from direct sun and heat sources while it acclimatises.
- If it is a valuable or antique piece, consult a furniture or objects conservator rather than experimenting.
What never to do:
- Do not force it. Wood fails suddenly at a notch corner, and a broken puzzle is not repairable to its original tolerance.
- Do not apply heat, a hairdryer, a radiator, or an oven. Fast drying causes checking and can distort a piece permanently.
- Do not soak, steam, or oil a stuck joint hoping to lubricate it. Adding moisture makes swelling worse, and oil in a joint changes the fit permanently.
- Do not sand the pieces to make them fit at their current size. When the season turns you will have a puzzle that rattles and no way to put the wood back.
Patience is genuinely the technique here. The wood put itself into that state and, given stable conditions, it will mostly come back out of it.
