Frustration Tolerance: Why Getting Stuck Is Part of the Point

An impasse is not a sign that something has gone wrong. In problem solving research it is a stage: the point where your current representation of the puzzle has been exhausted and no available move follows from it. Everyone hits it. What varies is what people do next, and whether they interpret it as information or as a verdict on themselves.

Difficulty that helps

The learning literature has a term for effort that feels unpleasant but pays off. Bjork’s framework of desirable difficulties holds that conditions making practice harder in the moment can produce better long term retention. A study in Memory and Cognition examining retrieval practice and spacing in young and older adults describes the underlying principle as more effortful retrieval leading to greater strengthening of the memory trace than less effortful retrieval, assuming successful retrieval occurs.

That last clause is easy to skim past and it carries the whole idea. Difficulty is desirable when you eventually get there. The same study found that items in a long lag condition were harder to retrieve initially but produced better retention than easily retrieved short lag items. It also found benefits plateaued: at a longer lag, testing beyond three attempts added nothing.

Applied to a puzzle, this is why the section you fought over for two evenings teaches you more about that manufacturer’s cut than the section that fell together in ten minutes. Struggle that resolves builds something. Struggle that never resolves mostly builds irritation.

Why easy learning is often shallow

The reason easy practice feels better is that fluency is mistaken for competence. When material is right in front of you and you are just recognising it, performance during the session looks excellent. Retention afterwards does not follow, because you never had to reconstruct anything.

Puzzlers reproduce this in miniature. Working with the box lid propped up and constantly consulted is quicker and teaches you less about reading pieces than working from memory of the image. Neither approach is wrong. They just do different things, and the more comfortable one is not the one that builds skill.

Persistence has a failure mode

The tidy version of this article would end with an encouragement to keep going. The research does not support that ending. A review in Frontiers in Psychology on the science of grit reports findings that grittier individuals exerted more effort than less gritty ones when finding solutions to unsolvable tasks, and stayed in a losing game despite opportunities to quit, at the cost of completing fewer other duties. The same review notes potentially damaging psychological costs to espousing grit in contexts where failure is bound to happen, and raises validity concerns about the construct itself.

Persisting is not automatically a virtue. On an unsolvable problem it is just expensive. And a puzzle can be unsolvable in practice for boring reasons: a missing piece, a manufacturing defect, a difficulty far past your current strategies.

Telling productive struggle from the pointless kind

There is no clean test, but some signals are reasonably reliable.

  • Productive: you are generating new approaches, even bad ones. The space of things you have tried is still growing.
  • Productive: you are learning something about the puzzle’s structure, even without solving it.
  • Pointless: you are repeating attempts you already made, with increasing conviction and no new information.
  • Pointless: you have stopped inspecting and started forcing.
  • Pointless: the session has become about not having been beaten rather than about the puzzle.

That last one is worth watching. When the goal quietly shifts from solving to not losing, you have left problem solving and entered something less useful.

Stepping away without quitting

Walking away from a stuck puzzle is not abandoning it. In practice, setting a stopping rule before you start works better than deciding in the moment, because in the moment you are the least well placed to judge. A time box, or a rule that you stop after three repeated approaches, externalises the decision.

It also helps to leave a note about where you were and what you had ruled out, so returning does not mean rebuilding the whole state from scratch. And it is entirely legitimate to decide a particular puzzle is not for you right now. Shelving something for a year and finding it tractable later is common, and it usually reflects skills built elsewhere rather than anything mystical.

Getting stuck is the part where the interesting work happens. Getting stuck indefinitely is just being stuck.
