Puzzles, Attention, and Recovering From Screen Fatigue

Switching from one cognitive strategy to another costs about 121 milliseconds. That figure comes from a 2024 study in Scientific Reports in which participants alternated between rotating objects mentally and rotating them manually. When people chose their own switches rather than being cued, the cost rose to roughly 230 milliseconds. A fifth of a second sounds like nothing. Multiply it across a day of moving between tabs, messages and documents and it stops being nothing.

The idea of attentional fatigue

The framework people usually reach for here is Attention Restoration Theory. It distinguishes directed attention, the effortful kind you use to concentrate on something that is not inherently gripping, from involuntary attention, which is captured without effort. The claim is that directed attention draws on a resource that depletes, producing the depleted, scattered feeling at the end of a long day, and that certain environments let it recover.

It is worth being straight about how well that claim has held up. A systematic review by Ohly and colleagues in the Journal of Toxicological and Environmental Health B examined the attention restoration potential of natural environments. Meta-analyses found significant positive effects for three measures, Digit Span Forward, Digit Span Backward and Trail Making Test B, while the remaining ten meta-analyses did not show marked beneficial effects. The authors noted small numbers of studies, small samples, and heterogeneity in both quality reporting and outcome measures, and concluded there is real uncertainty about which aspects of attention are affected.

So the theory is plausible and popular, and the evidence is mixed. That matters, because the restoration research is about natural environments. It is not about puzzles. Nobody has demonstrated that a jigsaw restores directed attention the way a walk in a wood is supposed to. Treating puzzles as an established restorative activity means borrowing evidence that was never collected about them and that is itself contested.

What can be said about the difference in the activity

The switch cost research is on firmer ground, and it describes something structural about a puzzle rather than something claimed about your brain chemistry.

  • A jigsaw is one task with one goal. There is no inbox in it.
  • The feedback is immediate and local, so you rarely need to hold an unresolved question open while attending to something else.
  • It is physical. Pieces exist in space, and the sorting you do offloads part of the problem onto the table instead of holding it in your head.
  • Nothing in it is designed to interrupt you. That is not true of most software.

The authors of the switching study also note that task switches may be frequently avoided because they evoke cognitive effort via demands on executive control, and that this effort is linked to negative affect. The reason fragmented attention feels bad may be partly that switching is genuinely effortful, not only that you got less done.

An honest description

Here is what is defensible. A puzzle is a single, self paced, uninterrupted task with immediate feedback, and spending an hour on one is structurally different from spending an hour moving between apps. People commonly report that it feels better afterwards. That report is real and it is worth something.

What is not defensible is the next step, the one that turns this into a wellness claim. Puzzles are not a treatment for attention problems. They are not a demonstrated intervention for fatigue, burnout, or anything with a clinical name. The research on restoration is contested and was not conducted on puzzling, and the research on switch costs describes a cost of switching rather than a benefit of puzzles.

If concentration is genuinely a problem

There is a meaningful difference between feeling scattered after a heavy week and finding that you consistently cannot hold attention on things you want to attend to. Persistent difficulty concentrating has many possible causes, including sleep problems, stress, mood, medication and a range of medical conditions, and working out which applies is a job for a doctor or an appropriately qualified clinician. It is not something to diagnose from a blog or to treat with a hobby.

The reasonable position is modest. Do puzzles because sitting with one absorbing thing for an evening is pleasant and because you like them. That is a sufficient reason and it does not require the science to say more than it actually says.
