The moment you brush glue across a finished puzzle, you have converted it from a reusable object into a picture. That is a legitimate choice, but it is worth making deliberately, because everything downstream, the mounting, the backing, the glazing and where the frame hangs, determines whether the picture survives a decade or looks tired in two years.
Adhesive versus mechanical mounting
There are two broad approaches and they are not equivalent.
Adhesive. Puzzle glue or PVA is spread over the assembled face, or applied to the back through a sheet, bonding the pieces into one rigid panel. It is quick, it works, and it is effectively permanent. Wet adhesive on the printed face also introduces moisture into a laminated board that was never designed to get wet, which can cause the printed liner to lift or the piece edges to swell.
Mechanical. The puzzle is slid onto a rigid support and held by the frame, a window mat and pressure, with no adhesive at all. It takes more care to set up and it will not survive being dropped face down, but it is reversible. You can take the puzzle apart later and it is still a puzzle.
Conservation practice generally favours reversibility, on the principle that a future owner should be able to undo your decisions. For a mass produced modern puzzle you are framing because you like it, adhesive is a reasonable choice. For anything old, scarce, or sentimentally irreplaceable, mechanical mounting is the safer default, and for a genuinely valuable vintage puzzle the right move is to ask a paper conservator rather than to improvise.
Acid migration and why backing board matters
The board behind the puzzle is in contact with it for the entire life of the frame, and if that board is acidic it will do damage. US National Archives guidance on paper-based records is explicit that acidic papers may become so brittle and weak over time that they are difficult to handle without breaking off pieces, and that highly acidic papers can also stain and degrade other records they are in contact with. Standard hardboard, ordinary corrugated cardboard and untreated wood backing all fall into that category.
The Archives’ guidance on displaying family papers sets out what to use instead. Mat board should be made from cotton rag or 100 percent chemically purified pulp and should be buffered or pH neutral and acid free. It also recommends using a window mat or spacers so that the glass or acrylic is not touching the surface of the original, which matters for puzzles because a printed liner pressed against glazing can stick to it over time.
One further recommendation is worth quoting because it is the conservator’s actual answer to display: the best protection from light is to display copies of the originals and keep the originals in a box.
Light, UV and fading
Printed inks fade, and light is the agent. The same National Archives guidance advises selecting glazing with ultraviolet filtering if the item will be displayed in a room with sunlight or fluorescent lighting, and avoiding daylight and fluorescent lighting because they contain a higher proportion of ultraviolet light, which is more damaging than visible light.
How seriously institutions take this is clear from the conditions the National Archives imposes on borrowers. Its technical guidelines for exhibiting loaned holdings require that UV must be filtered to no more than 10 microwatts per lumen, that light falling on holdings be limited to 10 hours of exposure per day including housekeeping time, and that natural light must be excluded from exhibition galleries entirely.
You are not running a gallery, and nobody expects a domestic frame to meet loan conditions. But the direction of travel is clear: less light, no direct sun, UV filtered glazing, and dark when nobody is looking.
Glazing options
- Standard glass. Cheap, rigid, scratch resistant, heavy, and offers little UV protection.
- UV filtering glass. The straightforward upgrade, and the one that addresses the actual mechanism of fading.
- Acrylic. Light and shatter resistant, useful for large frames, but scratches easily and carries a static charge, which is why archives warn against it for powdery or flaking media.
- Anti reflective coatings. A viewing improvement, not a preservation measure. Do not confuse them with UV filtering.
Where you hang it
Environment does as much damage as light. The National Archives asks lenders’ venues to maintain temperature between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit with fluctuations of no more than 5 degrees in any 24 hour period, and relative humidity at a set point between 35 and 50 percent, plus or minus 5 percent, with fluctuations of no more than 5 percent in 24 hours.
Translated to a house, that rules out the obvious offenders. Above a radiator, in a bathroom, on a sunlit south facing wall, in an unheated conservatory or against a damp external wall are all bad choices. An interior wall in a room you actually heat and live in is close to ideal, and it costs nothing.
