Caring for Metal Puzzles: Tarnish, Plating, and Storage

The most common way people damage a metal puzzle is not by forcing it. It is by cleaning it. A puzzle that has gone a bit dull gets a vigorous session with metal polish, comes out bright, and then never solves quite as smoothly again. Museums have thought carefully about this problem, and their conclusions apply directly to a shelf of puzzles.

What Tarnish Actually Is

The US National Park Service’s curatorial guidance on metal objects defines tarnish precisely: the discoloration of a bright metal surface by a thin film of corrosion products. Thin is the operative word. Tarnish is a surface layer, and on a puzzle it is almost always cosmetic rather than structural.

The guidance identifies the culprit too, stating that sulfur and sulfur compounds are probably the strongest tarnishing agents, present in air from burning fossil fuels and generated by products such as foam rubber, carpet padding, paints, wool and felt. It also notes that dirt and dust may contain compounds that react with metals or trap moisture against the surface.

Why Polishing Is the Wrong Reflex

The NPS guidance is blunt about this: cleaning and polishing remove original metal, and over-cleaning often results from a desire to have metals bright and shiny, especially with brass and silver objects. For a museum that means loss of original material. For a puzzle it means something more immediate.

Removing metal changes clearances. Puzzle solutions depend on gaps measured in tenths of a millimetre, and abrasive polish removes material preferentially from the raised edges and corners that define those gaps. Worse, most cast puzzles are plated, and plating is only a few microns thick. Polish through it and you expose the base metal, which then corrodes differently from the surrounding surface.

The safe approach, again from the same guidance, is a jeweller’s cloth used to wipe or buff away fingerprints on uncoated metal, selecting cloths that contain no abrasive and relying instead on the stiffness of the weave. Any clean soft cloth may be used to buff after handling. That is the whole cleaning routine for a puzzle collection.

Humidity Is the Real Control

Prevention beats treatment, and the lever is moisture. NPS guidance on creating a microclimate box for metal storage states that metal objects corrode and deteriorate when exposed to moisture and pollutants, that iron and copper alloy objects are especially vulnerable, and that to slow deterioration you should house metal objects below 35 percent relative humidity.

It also describes the practical solution: an enclosed space with an airtight seal, controlled with a desiccant such as silica gel or montmorillonite clay, which removes excess humidity and provides localised passive control without any mechanical system. A sealed plastic box with a rechargeable silica gel pack is a domestic version of exactly that, and it is cheap.

One counterintuitive note from the same body of guidance: avoid low temperatures for most metal objects, because low temperatures usually mean higher relative humidity and the possibility of condensation on metal surfaces. A cold garage is worse than a warm cupboard.

Handling: Do Oils Matter?

At museum scale, yes. The NPS guidance states that most metal objects should not be handled with bare hands, because salts and oils from your skin can etch metals and may even cause permanent damage, and recommends clean cotton, latex or synthetic rubber gloves.

Two of its cautions are specific and useful. Avoid cotton gloves with polyvinyl chloride nubs, because PVC residues may cause oxidation or tarnish. And synthetic rubber gloves are not recommended for handling silver or copper alloys, because some brands contain high proportions of sulfur and chlorides.

For a puzzle that exists to be handled, gloves are impractical and would ruin the point. The reasonable compromise is clean dry hands, a wipe with a soft cloth after a long session, and gloves reserved for pieces you consider collectible rather than solvable.

Storage Materials to Avoid

The guidance is specific about what should not share space with metal.

  • Hygroscopic materials. Keep metals away from paper, textiles and wood, which absorb and release moisture against the object.
  • Wood shelving. Steel shelving is preferred over wood.
  • Sulfur sources. Foam rubber, carpet padding, wool and felt are named as sulfur generators, which rules out the felt-lined boxes people reach for instinctively.
  • PVC. Named as a source of residues causing oxidation or tarnish.
  • Floors, exterior walls, attics and basements. Never store metal objects directly on the floor or close to exterior walls, and avoid attics and basements.

If a puzzle in your collection shows active corrosion rather than surface tarnish, or has historical value, that is a conversation for a professional conservator rather than a home remedy.
